“Seeds of Rift”

Judges 18 1-6

In those days there was no king of Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for themselves to live in, for until that day an inheritance had not been allotted to them as a possession among the tribes of Israel.

God had already revealed his will by the allotments given to the various tribes. They were searching for an oracle that would guarantee the success of their journey. Isn't this the tendency of each of our desperately sick hearts to seek opinions until we hear what we want to hear? Unable to possess their allotment of land, because they failed to drive out the enemy, the Danites sought God's blessing on their search for other territory. Jonathan, the pseudo-priest, told them what they wanted to hear (a "priest for hire" spouting pious platitudes to pander, please and placate).

Finally the priest gives them the message they wanted to hear. He was even careful to use the name of God to give the message credibility and authority. This is the sweet talk of a hired preacher who says what people want to hear. The Levite sent them on their way with a blessing, making a false claim that their journey was "before/in front of the Lord

Everything that we do in life is related to discovering who we are and what is God's plan for us? Some of us spend years on the wrong pathway to a perfect life. The ultimate home in life is not the pretty white house with horses running in the wild, it is the place that God has position each one of us for his purpose and glory. The many prophets, kings, rulers, presidents, pastors have made enough mistakes for us to learn how to avoid repeating the same acts of disobedience. As a kid I remember walking home from school in North Carolina, my brother and I would try out different ways to get home. It was our own version of “map quest”. The adventure would sometimes get us in trouble.

Whatever our reasoning where, it still under minded the obedient act of coming directly home. Have you ever showed up late to a special event and afterward you felt out of place. When we avoid taking the direct route to our problems, we commit a breach of consideration in any relationship; we allow things that are not of God to take root. Recently, I was given an alternate route instead of being obedient to the covenant of my marriage. Against the advice of many, I decided to follow God's will and his law. I had men of God, family members, friends at work telling me to separate.

The covenant of God is clear, it is unambiguous. The Danities stray away from the inheritance that God had promised them. They begin to put their trust in the worlds. They became the seeds of rifts. When we look to substitute the will of God, we give up knowing the right way to God's highway; we no longer have a map of his perfect will.

God continues to love us even when we turn from Him, He continues giving us second changes. The tribe of Dan broke His heart. He pursued them like a mother trying to save her children.

The word is clear about breaking a covenant with God! As we look to the present, what can we learn from the mistake of the Danities? . Time is running out! In the final judgment the alternative that we choose will not serve as an exception to the laws of God.

Amen
